Oslando is the noted Goan Folk-lorist, Singer-Guitarist, Composer,
music arranger and conductor - all rolled into one. Acknowledged
widely as the finest producer of authentic folk-music of Goa
with several recorded releases and All India Radio/TV performances
behind him, Oslando is a name to reckon with wherever there
are Goans and music. Truly the strains of his Goan Folk-song
renditions have delighted many a Goan heart not only in India
but also on foreign shores.
RECORDINGS RELEASED
He first hit the Goan musical scene in 1971 when HMV recorded
and released his famous composition "Pôiló Pauss" [The First
Rains]. Its runaway success was followed by another HMV release
in 1975 - a cassette entitled "New Konkani Hits", containing
four of his new compositions. In 1978 'Oriental Melodies' Company
commissioned him to record a cassette of the most popular traditional
art and folk songs of Goa - which was released in 1979 under
the title "SOUL OF GOA'. For over two decades this cassette
remained as the best seller among all the local folk-music releases!
In 1981 'V.P.Sinari & Co-Goa' commissioned him to record a second
cassette of Goan music depicting the Portuguese-influenced variety
of traditional Goan culture. This recording entitled "Goa Meu
Amôr" was released in 1982. Its highlight is Oslando's special
selection of unforgettable Portuguese melodies so intrinsically
forming part of the rich Goan culture. The cassette's immense
popularity has made its name a household word in the Goan music
circle. In 1984, 'V.P.Sinari & Co-Goa' commissioned him to record
another cassette of Goan music depicting the Goan Church -Feast
Day tradition. This recording entitled "Boas Festas" [Happy
Feast!] was released in 1985. There was a time in Goa when each
impending Church Feast was traditionally heralded by the melodious
pre-dawn musical sound, of the village brass band playing the
famous 'ALVORADA'. This cassette boasts, as part of its contents,
an actual brass-band rendition of "Alvorada" - which to this
day remains, for posterity, the only recording of its kind.
In 1991, 'V.P.Sinari & Co-Goa' once again commissioned him to
record yet another cassette of Portuguese and Konkani folk-songs.
This recording entitled "Nostalgia" was released in 1992. With
this additional release, Oslando completes the full gamut of
the best known folk-song tradition of Goa. His entire collection
of recorded releases is regarded by Goan Music lovers as a veritable
musical heritage of Goa! May his tribe increase! Over the years
Oslando has done innumerable recordings of Konkani Folk-Songs
for All India Radio broadcasts, notably as participating entries
in 'All-India Folk-Music Radio Festival' and in All - Asia Folk
Music Radio Festival.
In appreciation of his style of presentation of Konkani Folk-Songs
regularly, All India Radio featured Oslando prominently in their
'Akashvani' publication Vol XLI No. 23 dated 6th June1976 published
by the Director General All India Radio, New Delhi, acknowledging
the high standards established by him as All India Radio's Senior
performing artiste. Oslando's group, singing the traditional
Goan Art & Folk songs, has also appeared on Mumbai T.V. quite
a few times. But his most remembered T.V. show was the special
presentation ("pick of the week") done by Doordarshan, on 22nd
October 1986, of an artistic revival of the social graces and
charm of the famous Goan Mando Dance - performed with period
costumes as it was once danced by the goan landed aristocracy
some 100 years ago!.
Oslando is equally famous for his contribution to the city's
Western Musical scene as a Choral singer and as a conductor.
He is best known for his unrivalled male-voice singing Quartet
'The Minstrels'- which he led with distinction for over three
decades! As an English pop singer he has had two successful
releases of audio cassettes: 'Family Fiesta' (Party songs for
family occasions) and 'Christmas Fever' (Christmas Carols). There's
lots more to his credit worth writing about, but that would
fall outside the scope of this book!
